WELCOME

The aim of the organisation is to provide a voice to those who live - and wish to continue to live - in Sliema.

In order for SRA to be able to achieve its mission, help is required. This includes intellectual and financial help as well as muscle power. If you are interested in helping out, kindly write to SRA via the "contact us' page or  via e-mail, info@sra.org.mt, or write to us and posting it to  SRA, PO Box 66, Sliema. Monitory donations can be made by crediting our bank account; BOV account  4001935681-5.

This website is hosting Sliema Heritage Society.

Whats On lists forthcoming events which are cultural, religious, sportive etc however non-political and non-commercial in nature. It aims at promoting the local talents and events.  Activities appearing on this page are mainly organised by entities holding office in Sliema e.g religious institutions, band or sport clubs, cultural organisations and Sliema residents. However it also promotes activites taking place in  Sliema but organise by non-Sliema entities.

SRA seeks to stimulate public debate through topical Press Releases. We also intend to help residents address local issues by means of targeted Nuisance Reports which are researched. presented and escalated with the relevant authorities. Press releases and reports are archived and available for viewing in SRA Records

Original material is given under the Local Environment menu such as our air pollution monitoring commentary and 'To be or not to be'.

Development of the last open area in Sliema, which may increase the town's population by 10% and put 100s more cars on already clogged roads, is covered in a Case Study.  It seems that as the 'Iron Curtain' came down across Europe, the 'Concrete Curtain' of Sliema went up shutting out the sun and imprisoning local inhabitants in a perpetual building site...

The latest planning applications for Sliema are added online each weekend under Local Planning so that interested parties are able to participate in the proper consultation process.

With the launch of this website (kindly sponsored by Alert Communications), the SRA has moved email address to info@sra.org.mt

SRA aims to be inclusive and welcomes the views of all Sliema residents (emails may be submitted in Maltese or English as preferred).

Development of Forestals

MEPA has received two applications for the development of the Forestal's hut, showroom area and nearby dwelling, namely PA02590/09 and PA03613/10. SRA is objecting to this project in view of breach of height of building and also on environmental and health related issues. Click here to view full objection filed. Feel free to copy it and send it to MEPA via objakn@mepa.org.mt by 24th February 2012

MIDI Project

SRA is not alone in campaigning for real planning controls to be applied to the MIDI development – prompted by the developers’ failure to hold a public consultation meeting before the conclusion of the public consultation period, SRA and Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) organised a public meeting on the 24 of June 2011, which was attended by a record crowd of over 300 residents. Various aspects of the project and the MEPA processing were explained to the residents by SRA and FAA committee members, and the residents present confirmed that in spite of all the good undertakings of MEPA Reform, not one of them was aware of or had been informed of the development. Din L'Art Helwa is quoted (with permission) below: "any further building in the Tigne/Fort Cambridge area will continue Increase the density of the area unsustainably and will increase significantly the negative effect the development has on the sightlines across to the world heritage city of Valletta. Our organisation [Din L'Art Helwa] also declares that in the absence of a national policy for high rise development, no further applications of such scale should be considered until such policy is established"  On Thursday 19 january 2012, MEPA approved the building of 100 appartments during a public hearing.  Click here for full report.(19/01/12)
