MEPA Consultations

SRA intends to raise local awareness of planning applications which are under consideration at MEPA.  There is a usually a two week period allowed for public comment on such applications.  The public is advised of an application through the following means at present:
  • site notices at the location of the proposed development
  • newspapers via a multi-page advertisement in the Independent (English text only) each Saturday
  • the MEPA website via the Mapserver and the searchable PA register

However site notices are often removed or are inconspicuous.  Newspaper announcements are rarely seen by the neighbours most affected.  MEPA's website is crowded with old applications and the newest/those under public consultation are not distinguished in any manner.  But SRA can help - see our weekend updates under the Local Planning sub-menu!

Any objection (whether sent in by post, email or via the MEPA website) are acknowledged by MEPA.  Objectors (only!) are kept informed of subsequent meetings, changes or decisions in respect of planning applications.

Objectors (only) are notified so that they may attend the meeting at which the application to is expected be decided (many are deferred without decision).

By attending, objectors can witness the matters discussed (in Maltese), but are not officially entitled to speak.  Significant time must be allowed for attending any DCC hearing as the agenda is not fixed and the session may last for several hours.  The order in which the applications are dealt with is not fixed and depends on the attendance of the relevant architect.

SRA does not wish to encourage any frivolous or vexatious objections, but recommends residents should be aware of any developments in their immediate area which may impact their homes.  The best way of confirming if a threat is posed by an application is to visit MEPA and ask to see the relevant plans.  It may even prove wise to appoint an architect to review an application of concern.
